While you may love to sip on a glass of wine after a busy day of work or pair it with your favorite meal, you may be surprised to learn some of the extra ingredients found in your wine and how some can react to these wine allergens. Depending on your dietary restrictions and food allergies, you may want to either switch wines or educate yourself about all of the preservatives and potential wine allergens used in your favorite red or white to determine your allergy risk.
The good news is that because of aldehyde dehydrogenase deficiency, alcoholism and alcohol-related cancers are much less prevalent in East Asian populations. This is because people feel so bad after drinking alcohol, they tend to drink very little, if at all.
Why You Get Facial Flushing After Drinking May Surprise You
A potential drawback is that the citric acid in lemon juice could erode the enamel on your teeth. To prevent damage make sure the water is lukewarm, not steaming hot. You can also drink through a straw so it bypasses your teeth, and rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking. Wait 60 minutes after drinking to brush your teeth.
Out of all the questions your dentist or root canal specialist gets about root canals, probably this one is the most common: Does a root canal hurt? The answer, which may surprise you, is no. Root canals are generally performed in order to relieve tooth pain (although root canals may also be needed in teeth that are not causing pain), and pain after root canal treatment is not common.
The typical image that many of us have of someone who drinks heavily is that they have a red face and there is a lot of truth in this. The scientific explanation is that when you drink alcohol your blood vessels dilate, allowing more blood to flow near the surface of your skin, giving your face a red glow. Some people are more prone to facial flushing though, as due to a genetic mutation they are unable to process alcohol effectively, which not only leads to a change in their complexion, but soon makes them feel dizzy and develop palpitations, nausea and vomiting from only small amounts of alcohol(2). This gene mutation is more common among people of Chinese, Japanese and Korean descent and owing to the consequences of drinking they are less likely to abuse alcohol.
Santa Monica Pier, for example, came as a surprise this year. This popular tourist attraction used to consistently log the worst grades in the state because of a big storm drain under the pier. But that changed after 2018, when the city built a 1.6-million-gallon tank beneath the parking lot to capture and recycle dirty runoff before it flushed into the ocean.
With more and more people using protein supplements, it's not surprising that doctors are seeing more incidents of food allergies linked to consuming protein shakes. In Archives of Clinical Case Studies, allergy specialists at the University of Nebraska Medical Center report seeing several patients with significant allergic reactions after drinking whey protein shakes, including sneezing, throat swelling, flushed skin, abdominal pain with cramps, explosive diarrhea, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
"Protein shakes can be very high in calories, especially from added sugars," says Leann Poston, MD, of Invigor Medical. "You may not feel full after drinking a liquid shake and follow it with a full meal."
The second category, Red Wine Intolerance occurs even though there are no allergen-specific immunological reactions. Symptoms commonly experienced after a glass or two of a full-bodied red wine include headache, stuffy nose, skin flushing. Intolerances are usually more difficult to pinpoint because they frequently depend on a variety of factors like the type and amount of wine consumed and even the food being eaten at the same time. In fact, researchers have made very clear distinctions between these two physiological responses to wine, as can be seen in the figure below.
One common question that we get at PureWine is whether or not turning red (i.e. developing a flushed appearance) after drinking Red Wine is indicative of an allergy. In truth, flushing is a symptom of Red Wine Intolerance, and not Red Wine Allergy. For individuals who have a low level of the enzyme called Alcohol Dehydrogenase (ADH), they more slowly eliminate the metabolite of ethanol -acetaldehyde. In fact, 46% of Japanese and 56% of Chinese individuals are deficit of this enzyme and is commonly called "Asian Flush". Amongst Caucasians, almost half of all females and just 8% of all males have a similar deficiency [2].
You may be surprised to learn these agents are commonly used by winemakers! Consequently, patients who have allergies to seafood, eggs, dairy and a variety of other allergens may experience Red Wine Allergies after consuming Red Wines.
Used water (also known as wastewater or sewage) is pumped through the wastewater system to one of our two wastewater treatment plants. The water is then cleaned and returned to the Trinity River, where it flows downstream and is used by other cities. You may be surprised to learn that the treated wastewater we return to the river is much cleaner than the water we take out of the river upstream to purify for drinking water. We consistently meet stringent state and EPA wastewater standards and have won awards for our wastewater treatment facilities and operations. 2ff7e9595c
