Analysis: In a way, Shadow Lake is at once scarier and darker, and somehow simultaneously cornier than its predecessors, packed with tense moments and jump scares that you'd think would clash with the likes of Jack Talon and even Cassandra's incessant nattering... and yet they don't. Apart from Jack "YO PRISONERS" Talon being the actual best, the patter and cheese feels like it rides comfortably alongside the quiet, frightening mood of the rest of the game, providing a sort of wonderfully self-aware humour and over-the-top characters. In one case, really, really over the top. Really. The actual mystery you'll be solving is surprisingly intriguing because it gives you so little of the big picture in the beginning, and the slow revelation as you travel around town is handled very well. The downside is that if you miss finding the two "secret" tapes left behind by Ghost Patrol, you'll also be missing out on some backstory and exposition that fleshes out the game's narrative. And more Jack Talon.
As he did so he felt a light breeze lift him. It came from the north, where those dark clouds had swallowed up his rainbow. A strange, weirdthing was happening up there in those clouds, and the boy paused towatch. Down the shimmering floor of the lake, sweeping slowly towardshim, came a great army. Stealthy, hurrying shapes, with bent,grey-cowled heads, and trailing garments, rank on rank they stoleforward, mystery and fear in their every movement. Many a time, on anautumn evening, the boy had watched the fog start away up the lake andcome stealing down, until the islands and the town and the forest werecovered as with a blanket. But he had never seen anything so awesomeas this. The strange shapes into which the light gusts of wind haddriven the mist made them look like an army of ghosts driven out of thehaunts of night. They were bringing night in their train, too. For asthey swept silently onward, everything in earth and lake and sky wasblotted out. One by one the islands vanished; the far-off easternshore was wiped away as if by some magic hand. The tower of the littleIndian church stood out for a moment above the flood and then sankengulfed; and the next moment the great host had swept over the littlesailor and he was walled in and cut off from land and water, alone in acloudy sea with neither shore nor sky nor surface. The boy turnedswiftly towards his home, and when he saw that it, too, was gone, heuttered a cry of terror. "Daddy, oh, Daddy!" he wailed. Collie cameclose and licked his face and whined, then looked about him and growleddisapprovingly at the weird thing that surrounded them. The boy puthis arms tight around the dog's neck and hugged him. "Oh, Collie!" hecried, "we're lost, and I don't know where home is and where Daddy is."It was not the loss of gold that troubled him now. He stared about himin the greyness, striving to make out some object. The fog was sothick that he could see only the length of the canoe, but a big, darkermass of shadow in a world of shadows, told him where Wanda Island lay,and grasping his paddle, he started in what he believed to be thedirection of home. He paddled until he was out of breath, rested amoment, then went at it again with all his might. The pain in his armreturned, but he dared not stop. And as he worked madly in his effortsto reach home, the gentle wind was slowly but surely carrying him outto the open lake.
